Just glancing at the handbook it seems a little overwhielming after reading it does not look too bad.

Yeah - the syllabus looks over whelming but I think he goes into a lot of detail on all the homework, so it looks like more than it actually is.
And yes - if you look at the calander, you just go in order of the assignment deadlines.
